Avila

De  Nederlandse kunstenaar Sebastiaan Bremer (1970) maakte in 1994 de definitieve oversteek naar New York. Altijd staat een foto aan de basis van zijn werk. Hierop reageert hij door met inkt een ragfijn stippelpatroon uit te zetten, dat organisch uitwaaiert over het oppervlak als een sponsachtig weefsel. Dit hedendaagse ‘pointillisme’ wordt in sommige werken aangevuld met bonte kleurpartijen van inkt die de onderliggende foto uiteindelijk onherkenbaar maken. Bremer geeft zo zijn hersenspinselen letterlijk de vrije loop. De laatste jaren hebben deze abstracte patronen plaats gemaakt voor figuratieve voorstellingen, geïnspireerd door 17e eeuwse vanitas-stillevens. Avila is een oogstrelend boek, waarin het virtuoze en hallucinerende werk van Bremer op een briljante manier werd gereproduceerd.

De belangstelling voor het werk van Sebastiaan Bremer is de laatste jaren snel groeiende. Hij heeft regelmatig solopresentaties, o.m. bij de New Yorkse galerie Edwynn Houk, Hales Gallery in Londen en bij Ron Mandos in Amsterdam. Ook nam hij deel aan diverse groepstentoonstellingen, o.m. in de Tate Modern, Londen (2004), PS1/MoMA, New York (2004) en The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, USA (2007). In Nederland was zijn werk te zien in een aparte presentatie tijdens de grote tentoonstelling van de Rabobank Kunstcollectie in het Gemeentemuseum Den Haag (2005) en in het Armando Museum (2007) en Kunsthal KAdE Amersfoort (2014) en Singer Museum in Laren (2025).

Zijn werk is o.a. opgenomen in de collectie van de National Gallery Washington, MoMA New York City, Victoria and Albert Museum Londen, AKG Buffalo.

In 2026 verscheen bij 99 Uitgevers/Publishers Super Modern Things, een monografie met een overzicht van bloemwerken door de jaren heen.

The Dutch artist Sebastiaan Bremer (1970) made his permanent move to New York in 1994. A photograph invariably forms the starting point for his work. He responds to the image by applying an intricate pattern of tiny ink dots, which spreads organically across the surface like a porous tissue. In some works, this contemporary form of “pointillism” is complemented by vivid areas of coloured ink that ultimately render the underlying photograph unrecognisable. In this way, Bremer quite literally gives free rein to his imagination. In recent years, these abstract patterns have given way to figurative compositions inspired by seventeenth-century vanitas still lifes. Avila is a visually captivating book in which Bremer’s virtuoso and hallucinatory work has been reproduced to brilliant effect.

Interest in Sebastiaan Bremer’s work has grown rapidly in recent years. He has regularly presented solo exhibitions, including at Edwynn Houk Gallery in New York, Hales Gallery in London and Ron Mandos in Amsterdam. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including at Tate Modern, London (2004), PS1/MoMA, New York (2004), and The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, USA (2007). In the Netherlands, his work was featured in a dedicated presentation as part of the major exhibition of the Rabobank Art Collection at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag (2005), as well as in exhibitions at the Armando Museum (2007), Kunsthal KAdE in Amersfoort (2014), and Singer Laren (2025).

His work is represented in the collections of, among others, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo.

In 2026, 99 Uitgevers/Publishers published Super Modern Things, a monograph surveying Bremer’s floral works over the years.
