Super Modern Things

Het werk van kunstenaar Sebastiaan Bremer (1970) kenmerkt zich door een verfijnde techniek waarbij hij foto’s en historische afbeeldingen bewerkt met uiterst fijne lijnen en stippen. Zo ontstaan gelaagde, detailrijke beelden. Bloemen vormen al 35 jaar een rode draad in Bremers oeuvre. Ze symboliseren voor hem zowel de schoonheid als de vergankelijkheid van het leven.

Zijn fascinatie voor bloemmotieven vindt haar oorsprong in verschillende historische bronnen. Zo inspireerde een boek uit 1948 over Nederlandse bloementeelt hem door de levendige kleuren en composities. Later ontdekte Bremer een zeldzame tulpencatalogus uit de tijd van de tulpenmanie (1636–1637). De oorsprong van de ‘Nederlandse’ tulp in Centraal-Azië en haar reis via het Midden-Oosten naar Europa raakten voor hem aan thema’s als migratie, toe-eigening, handel en waardecreatie. Ook liet hij zich inspireren door zeventiende-eeuwse bloemstillevens van onder anderen Ambrosius Bosschaert de Oude, Jan van Huysum en Rachel Ruysch.

In september 2026 verscheen de 124 pagina’s tellende monografie Super Modern Things, die een rijk overzicht biedt van Bremers bloemwerken. Zijn werk is internationaal tentoongesteld en opgenomen in vooraanstaande museumcollecties, waaronder die van MoMA, het Victoria and Albert Museum, de National Gallery of Art en LACMA.

Speciale editie
Ter gelegenheid van de publicatie verschijnt een speciale editie met een keuze uit vier prints. Elke print is door Sebastiaan Bremer met de hand bewerkt, waardoor geen twee exemplaren identiek zijn. Bekijk hier de editie.

Tentoonstellingen
Van 15 februari tot augustus 2027 is er in het Verwey Museum in Haarlem een tentoonstelling van Bremers bloemwerken te zien. In september 2027 presenteert Galerie Ron Mandos in Amsterdam een tentoonstelling met werk uit dezelfde serie.

The work of artist Sebastiaan Bremer (1970) is characterised by a refined technique in which he transforms photographs and historical images with extremely fine lines and dots, creating richly layered and highly detailed compositions. Flowers have been a recurring theme in Bremer’s work for 35 years. For him, they symbolise both the beauty and the transience of life.

His fascination with floral imagery has its roots in various historical sources. One important inspiration was a 1948 book on Dutch flower cultivation, whose vivid colours and compositions made a lasting impression on him. Bremer later discovered a rare tulip catalogue dating from the period of tulip mania (1636–1637). The fact that the supposedly ‘Dutch’ tulip originated in Central Asia and travelled to Europe via the Middle East resonated with broader themes in his work, including migration, appropriation, trade and the creation of value. He also drew inspiration from seventeenth-century flower still lifes by artists such as Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder, Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch.

In September 2026, the 124-page monograph Super Modern Things was published, offering a rich overview of Bremer’s flower works. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major museum collections, including those of MoMA, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Gallery of Art and LACMA.

Exhibitions
